Top Players Ready to Take on Baltusrol in Carter Cup

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 23, 2015) – The 13th Carter Cup returns to Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., on Wednesday, August 29 when a full field of the best juniors in the Met Area will take on Baltusrol’s challenging Upper and Lower Courses.

The Carter Cup annually features top talent from Met Area juniors, and the list of past champions includes many who have gone onto successful careers, such as Morgan Hoffmann and Cameron Wilson, and this year is no different with many young and already accomplished players getting ready to take on the famed Baltusrol Golf Club.

Newly crowned Met Junior champion James McHugh of Rye, N.Y., is in the field looking to add a second MGA title to his resume. McHugh, 17, finished tied for 13th in last year’s Carter Cup and last week defeated James Nicholas of Scarsdale, N.Y., in the final match of the Met Junior Sponsored by MetLife. With a win at the Carter Cup, McHugh would become only the second player to win the Carter Cup and Met Junior in the same year, a feat that Pat Fillian accomplished in 2004.

McHugh will face some familiar faces at the Carter Cup – players from the Met Junior who advanced to match play receive an invitation to the Carter Cup. Semifinalists Chris Yeom of New Hyde Park, N.Y., and 15-year-old Ethan Ng of New York, N.Y., fresh off of an appearance at the U.S. Junior, join the field as some of the top competitors to watch.

Dawson Jones of Howell, N.J., the 2014 Met Junior winner, and Brent Ito, the reigning MGA/MetLife Boys champion, will bring their talents to Baltusrol as they seek another victory. Another past MGA champion, Ryan Rodriguez of Highland Mills, N.Y., who claimed the 2013 MGA/MetLife Boys, brings his experience to the field.  Rodriguez, 17, won the Section 9 Boys Golf Title earlier this year.

Some other names to watch include Bear Carlson of Katonah, N.Y., who finished seventh in last year’s event; William Voetsch of New Vernon, N.J., the N.J. Boys Golfer of the Year who just finished his high school career at Delbarton, the same school that Michael Carter attended; and Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y., the Metropolitan Junior PGA champion who will play in the Junior PGA Championship in Texas the week after the Carter Cup.

The Junior Club Champion from Baltusrol will be determined by July 24, and that winner will enter the field to represent the home course. Baltusrol has annually hosted the invitational championship, with the exception of 2005 when it was held at Winged Foot due to the PGA Championship at Baltusrol. The 2016 Carter Cup will be played at Winged Foot for the same reason.

The Carter Cup was first played in 2003 and is named in honor of 20-year-old Michael Carter, an accomplished junior player at Baltusrol and standout member of the golf team at New Jersey’s Delbarton School who died in a car accident in 2002. Michael Carter had won the junior club championships at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot, and at the time of his death played for Penn State, and this event is played in his memory.

The Carter Cup has a short history but the list of past champions includes PGA TOUR player Morgan Hoffmann (2005), now professionals Max Buckley (2007), Cameron Wilson (2009), David Pastore, the 2014 MGA Player of the Year (2010), and junior standout Cameron Young (2011). The championship is invite-only, based on a criteria set by the MGA and MGA Foundation. Golfers must not yet be 19 years of age and have not yet started college by July 29, 2015.

The MGA will be conducting live scoring throughout both rounds on Wednesday. For live scoring and full coverage of the 13th Carter Cup, please visit www.mgagolf.org and download our mobile app, My MGA.
