The Road to Pinehurst

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (May 16, 2014) - As the 114th U.S. Open quickly approaches, top Met Area players are one step closer to playing amongst the world's best players at Pinehurst. The MGA conducted four Local Qualifying Rounds in which professionals and amtaeurs alike competed for coveted qualifying positions. From there, the local qualifiers will play in a 36-hole Sectional Qualifying Round on June 2, deemed "golf's longest day." There are 10 Sectional sites around the country, and the MGA will be hosting a SQR at Old Oaks and Century Country Clubs in
Purchase, N.Y.

Below are the results and recaps from the MGA's four Local Qualifiers:

May 5 - Mill River Club, Oyster Bay, N.Y.

Some other Met Area players advanced through local qualifying at different sites throughout the country:

  • Sunny Kim, the 2004 MGA/MetLife Boys Champion, was the medalist at the Delray Beach, Fla., site. Chris Scialo of New City, N.Y., advanced at the same site, and Marc Turnesa of Jupiter, Fla., is the first alernate.

  • 2006 Carter Cup champ Chris DeForest of Cottekill, N.Y. advanced in Loudonville, N.Y.

  • Rex Riley of Short Hills, N.J. made to the sectional level after adavancing through at Laurel Creek, N.J.

  • Former CSGA Player of the Year Cody Paladino of Kensington, Conn., earned a qualifying position in Twin Hills, Mass.

  • Amateur Gavin Hall of Pittsford, N.Y., was a co-medalist at Old Oaks/Century last year, and he again qualified in Rochester.

  • 2010 Met Amateur winner Evan Beirne of Jupiter, Fla. finished as second alternate at the Jupiter site. He had former St. John's teammate Keegan Bradley on the bag.

  • Pat Wilson of Andover, N.J., the 2013 Met Am winner, was the second alternate at Egg Harbor, N.J.
