ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Nine time MGA Player of the Year, George Zahringer III is set to compete in the 2003 Masters at Augusta National starting on Thursday, April 10th.  Zahringer is one of only four amateurs invited to compete this year and earned the coveted spot by virtue of his historic win at the U.S. Mid Amateur Championship at the Stanwich Club in 2002.  The victory came after an all- Met -Area final in which George defeated ’95 champion Jerry Courville Jr. of Shorehaven GC, to become, at age 49, the oldest U.S. Mid Amateur Champion in history.  A member of The Stanwich Club, George also became the tournament’s first “home club” champion.

Savoring the experience began for George when he received his invitation last Fall.  “My first thought was about the document itself. Don’t spill any coffee on it or stain it,” he thought. There’s not many of these that someone can have and frame.”  The document is now safe and displayed proudly in his offices at Bear Stearns where George is a Senior Managing Partner.

Next week George will rub shoulders and share fairways with the game’s most prominent superstars. His goal is to make the weekend and finish as the low amateur, thus earning an invitation to Butler Cabin at the tournament’s conclusion.  That’s a tall order for any amateur, but those who know George know that with his golf game, anything is possible.
