Bichsel, Araskog, Yang and Murphy Advance in 2005 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship

 

Rumson, N.J. – Rounds one and two of 2005 MGA/MetLife Boys Championship at Rumson Country Club in Rumson, NJ were completed today leaving just four boys left vying for the title.  Max Bichsel, Rand Araskog, Gene Yang and Brian Murphy will play tomorrow for the championship.

With defending champion Sun Ho Kim unable to defend his title this year, having reached his sixteenth birthday, the event is looking to crown a new champion.   Fourteen year old rising star Gene Yang of East Brunswick, NJ, the winner of the 2005 MGA Junior Championship, made a strong statement in the morning round defeating Chris LaPolice of Stamford, CT by an impressive score of 7 & 6 after going 6-up after only nine holes.  Tim Rosenhouse of Dix Hills, NY defeated Rob Viola of Franklin Hills, NJ 2 & 1 in the morning matches and went on to face Yang in the afternoon match.  Rand Araskog of Locust Valley, NY was victorious over Jeff Bradke of Oyster Bay, NY 4 & 3 in the morning round and went on to defeat Kyle Stucklen of Sayville, NY in the afternoon 4 & 3.  Max Bichsel of Cranbury, NJ beat Doug Kleeschulte of Kingston, NY 3 & 2 and Brian Hwang of Happauge, NY 4 & 3.  Brian Murphy of Wilton, CT defeated Anthony Aloi of Plainsboro, NJ 4 & 3 in morning action and prevailed over Nick Urso of Ellenvill, NY 1-up in the afternoon round.

This event is a match play championship for boys not yet 16 years of age on August 12, and who are members of an MGA member club or enrolled in accredited schools in the Metropolitan Golf Association’s district.  

Contestants in the Boys Championship qualified concurrently during the qualifying for the 2005 MGA Junior Championship, which was held at Hempstead Country Club in Hempstead, NY, on July 19-21. 

The winner of the MGA/MetLife Boys Championship earns an exemption into the 2006 MGA Junior Championship scheduled for The Apawamis Club in Rye, NY on July 18-20.
