GREG ROHLF AND MARC ISSLER ADVANCE TO FINALS

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (August 4, 2007) Greg Rohlf of Winged Foot will meet Marc Issler of Pine Barrens (N.J.) in the finals of the 105th Met Amateur Championship at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, New York. The 42-year-old Rohlf is looking to win his third MGA title, and the second at his former home course. His opponent in the finals, the 21-year-old Issler, is looking for his first MGA victory. The 36-hole final will begin at 7:30 a.m. with the second 18 holes scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Issler, who is an incoming senior at High Point (N.C.) University, faced off in Saturday’s semifinal against Matt Kleinrock of Forest Hill Field Club. Issler took a two-up lead on the fourth hole and Kleinrock, who will be a senior at Jacksonville University in the fall, was never able to mount a charge, mostly due to Issler’s four-under-par front nine.

“I played much better today, similar to the way I played on Thursday [when he was medalist in stroke play qualifying],” said Issler. “Matt played great today too. I don’t think par won a single hole, you had to make birdies.”

Rohlf, a four-time Wykagyl club champion during his 19 years as a member, returned to his former club for the opportunity to claim his second MGA title at Wykagyl. Rohlf won the 1998 Ike Championship at the club en route to winning the 1998 MGA Player of the Award, and also won the 1999 Met Amateur at Deepdale. The Rohlf-Foley match was even for the first three holes until Rohlf parred the par-three-fourth hole to take a lead he wouldn’t relinquish until late in the match, when Foley birdied the par-four 15th hole. However, Rohlf quickly regained the lead with a par at the long par-three 16th after Foley hit a bunker shot over the green and failed to save par. But the most important swing of the match may have been the 30-foot, par-saving putt Rohlf made at the 13th, which helped him maintain his one-up lead.

“That was one of the turning points, I hit a lot of good putts today, but that one on 13 was a big swing in the match,” said Rohlf.

In addition to his putting, Rohlf used the tremendous support from the Wygakyl membership to his advantage. Crowds followed the twosome throughout the match, and the effect of the roars was not lost on Marc Issler, who could hear the cheering from the hole ahead of Rohlf. “I’m going to tell everybody I know to try to get up here,” said Issler with a laugh.

“The funny thing is, the first time I came back after joining Winged Foot for a member guest, they booed me,” joked Rohlf. “Now they’re cheering me and it feels great to have that support out there.”

The final match, which begins at 7:30 a.m., should be an exciting one as Greg Rohlf looks to recapture his winning ways and Issler looks to cap off an exceptional week.
