Redding Repeats at Women's Net Team

NORTH CALDWELL, N.J. (October 4, 2007) - The Redding Country Club team ofElaine Laux and Monica Riggs fired a 10-under-par net 63 to successfully defend theirMGA/MetLife Women’s Net Team title at Green Brook Country Club. The Otterkill team of Carole Seneca and Han Lee, who finished third in 2006, carded a nine-under net 64 to finish in second place, one stroke better than Jane Cohen and Wanda Taktikos of Salem.

Laux and Riggs got off to a fast start at Green Brook with a four-under net 32 on the front nine, but it was the sizzling 31 on the back that sealed the victory. The two-time champs simply made birdie after birdie to keep themselves ahead of the hot pace set by the Otterkill team, which fired a net 31 on the front nine to take the early lead. However, a 33 on the back nine was not enough for Otterkill to take over the Redding duo. Redding’s victory marks the first time since 1993-1994 (Anna Appel and Joyce Trabattoni of High Mountain) that a team has claimed consecutive Women’s Net Team titles. The win earns Laux and Riggs an exemption into the 2008 championship.

The Rock Hill Women team of Betty Hardy and Tina Wess had a net 67 to finish alone in fourth. And rounding out the top five with a score of net 69 were the Wykagyl team of Jacelyn Angelone and Susan Bartow and the Suffolk County team of Rita Timpanaro and Barbara Gladstone.

Today marked the first time Green Brook Country Club has hosted the MGA/MetLife Women’s Net Team Championship in the event’s 22-year history. The players were unanimous in their comments that the course played fair and was in great condition.

The 28 teams in today’s championship began by qualifying at the club level for the MGA/MetLife Women’s Net Team Championship, before moving on to one of three Sectional Qualifying Rounds. For more information please contact Gene Westmoreland or Bob Nielsen at (914) 347-4653.
