MGA Announces Carey Cup Team

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 24, 2007) - The Metropolitan Golf Association is pleased to announce the members of their six-man amateur team which will compete against a similar team from the Golfing Union of Ireland in the Governor Hugh L. Carey Challenge Cup Matches at Trump National Golf Club - Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. The Carey Cup Matches are named for former New York State Governor Hugh L. Carey who founded the event as a means of stimulating sportsmanship and goodwill between the two countries. It was inaugurated in 1996 and played at Hudson National Golf Club in Croton-On-Hudson, N.Y., and since then has alternated between the two countries bi-annually.

Led by non-playing captain Al Small of Fairmount, the MGA team includes 2007 Met Amateur champion Greg Rohlf of Winged Foot and 2007 Long Island Amateur champion Joe Saladino of Huntington. They will be joined by two-time New Jersey State Open champion Brian Komline of High Bridge Hills and 14-year-old Cameron Wilson of Shorehaven, the 2006 MGA/MetLife Boys winner who made a splash at the 2007 Met Amateur. Former Carter Cup champion Morgan Hoffmann of Arcola, one of the top-ranked junior players in the country, and 2007 Havemeyer Invitational champion Adam Fuchs of Hamlet Windwatch round out the MGA team.

The Golfing Union of Ireland will again field a strong team featuring some of Ireland’s top young amateur golfers. The team includes Paul Cutler, the 2007 Ulster Boys champion; 2007 Irish Close Championship semifinalist Cian Curley; and Niall Kearney, the 2005 Irish Boys Champion. They will be joined by the 2007 Irish Close champion Shane Lowry, 2007 Mulligan Scratch trophy winner Paul O’Hanlon, andSimon Ward, who won the South of Ireland Championship in 2006.

The Carey Cup is similar in format to the Walker Cup and consists of fourball, foursome and singles matches over two days. The MGA captured the inaugural Cup in 1996, but the GUI has won the last five renewals, in 1998 at the new Links at Portmarnock outside Dublin; in 1999 at the Maidstone Club in East Hampton, N.Y.; in 2001 at Portmarnock Golf Club; at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in 2003; and the most recent playing in 2005 at Carton House in Ireland. Two previous competitions between the two teams, in 1990 at Metedeconk National Golf Club in Jackson, N.J., and at the Waterville Links in Ireland in 1991, were split.

In conjunction with this event, the MGA Foundation and former Governor Hugh L. Carey, host a very special Am-Am competition prior to the start of the matches. This event pairs three amateurs with each of the official team members in a best ball competition and is conducted on the same course as the official matches. The day provides a unique opportunity to meet and play with some of the best amateur golfers on both sides of the Atlantic and will benefit the MGA Foundation’s junior golf and educational programs. This year the Am-Am will also provide a venue for an MGA/MetLife Junior Clinic, the third in a series of three youth programs conducted jointly by the MGA and MetLife, sponsor of eight MGA events and our Calendar of Competitions. Spots in the Am-Am are available for a donation to the MGA Foundation and can be reserved by contacting Kate Keller at 914-347-4653 orkkeller@mgagolf.org.

Trump National Golf Club - Westchester in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., a Jim Fazio-designed course with a newly completed clubhouse will provide a fantastic setting for the Carey Cup Matches. The par 72, 7,291-yard layout includes some of the Met Area’s most scenic and challenging golf holes. With a course rating of 77.8 and a slope of 153, Trump National should provide a formidable test for both teams.

The Carey Cup Matches are open to the public and free of charge. For more information, contact Jeanne McCooey or Kate Keller at 914-347-4653.
