Inside the Rules

Every two weeks MGA Senior Director of Rules and Competitions Gene Westmoreland will answer one question posed by the readers of the MGA e-Revision Newsletter (click here to sign up). Matt from New Jersey asked Gene the following Rules question:

I know the teeing area is between the tee markers and two clubs deep. Can the two club lengths be any club in your bag, or does it have to be the club you are going to use?

Gene responds:

Hello Matt, you asked if you could use any club in your bag when measuring the depth of the teeing ground. Any time the Rules of Golf make mention of a “club length” to measure an area in which to drop a ball or, to answer your question, to measure the depth of the teeing ground the player is free to measure the club lengths with any of the 14 clubs he chooses for play.
