Format Change to Met Junior

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (January 9, 2014) – The Metropolitan Golf Association has announced that it will add an on-site stroke play component to its esteemed Met Junior Championship. The change will be effective at this year’s tournament, the 97th edition, to be held at Rockaway River Country Club in Denville, N.J., on July 15-17, 2014.

As in previous years, four sectional qualifying rounds (SQR) will be held to determine the final field of the nation’s oldest junior championship. Each SQR will be held over 18 holes and have an allotment of qualifying spots, including ties.

Approximately 70 players will advance to the championship site, where they will play 36 holes of stroke play competition on Day 1. The low sixteen (16) scores will qualify for match play, which starts on Day 2 and will ultimately determine the champion.

Schedule of Competition

Day One:

Approximately 70 golfers go through 36 holes of stroke play qualifying, reducing the field to sixteen by the end of the day. (A sudden death playoff will immediately follow play in the event of a tie for the sixteenth spot.)

Day Two:

Round of 16, Quarterfinals (8 players)

Day Three:

Semifinal (4 players), Championship Match (2 players)

The championship is preceded by the MGA/MetLife Pro-Junior, in which the contestants team with Met Area golf professionals in a competition and also have an up-close look at the venue for the Junior championship. Players and their guests are then guests at the traditional Junior Banquet on the eve of the championship.
