Liu the Low Finisher at Azalea Invitational

UPDATED: March 25, 2013) - All four Met Area amateurs in the field at the rain-shortened Azalea Invitational placed in the top 40, giving the Met Area another strong showing in the renowned championship. 

Liu was the low local, firing a sensational 8-under 63 in the second round to finish T4. Miller ended up in 7th after shooting a pair of 70s. 

Guise went 69-75 to finish T20 while Bernstein's even-par 71 gave him a share of 34th. 

The 112-player event was cut short to 36 holes (scheduled for 72) because of severe rain.

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (March 20, 2013) - Four promising Met Area amateurs will head down south this week for one of the most notable national amateur championships of the season. The Azalea Invitational at The Country Club of Charleston begins Thursday and attracts some of the biggest names in amateur golf.

Headlining the locals competing is Mike Miller of Knollwood who is back in the U.S. following a strong T3 finish at the Portugese Amateur. Miller is also the highest ranked player in the field, according to GOLFWEEK/Amateurgolf.com, at No. 8 in the world.

Miller is joined by Jim Liu of Stonebridge, who is currently No. 1 in GOLFWEEK'S Junior Rankings. Liu finished as the runner-up and on-site co-medalist at the 2012 U.S. Junior Amateur (which he won in 2010).

Sam Bernstein of Century, a junior on the Yale University golf team and Danny Guise of Westchester Hills will join Miller and Liu. Bernstain won the 2012 CSGA Palmer Cup and finished T5 in last year's Ike, while Guise recently committed to play golf for Wake Forest next year.

The Invitational has been held every spring since 1946, with the exception of 2006 when the course was undergoing renovations. A cut of the top 60 scores and ties will be made after 36 holes, with another 36 holes held on Saturday and Sunday.

Previous champions include top PGA Tour pros such as two-time winner Webb Simpson, Casey Wittenberg, and Spencer Levine.
