Met Area Women Ready for USGA Women's State Team Championship

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (September 13, 2013) - Beginning on Tuesday, September 17, 52 teams consisting of three women will compete in the USGA Women's State Team Championship at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio. This is the 10th year of the biennial competition which involves three-person teams in a 3-count-2 stroke-play format for 54 holes.

Representing New York is the powerful trio of Ellen Oswald of New City,  Alexis Hios of Rye, and Denise Martorana of Sag Harbor.

Oswald, 23 and a 2012 graduate of St. John's University, won the WMGA's Stroke Play and Match Play Championships this season. She was just a member of the winning team in the MGA/WMGA Mixed Pinehurst Championship at Saint Andrew's Golf Club.  Hios, 17, won the 2013 Met PGA Junior Match Play in August and the New York State Girls Junior Amateur. She qualified for the 2013 U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship as well. Her and Oswald both play out of Westchester Country Club. Martorana will be playing in her second consecutive USGA Senior Women's Amateur the week after the State Team Championship. Her golf accomplishments include top finishes in the MGA/WMGA's Women's Met Amateur and the WMGA Stroke Play Championship.

Three accomplished New Jersey players will represent the Garden State: Alice Chen of Princeton, Cindy Ha of Demarest, and Tara Fleming of Jersey City.

Chen, 17, is the 2013 New Jersey Women's Amateur and Junior Girls Champion. She competed in this year's U.S. Girls Junior and the 2012 U.S. Women's Public Links. Ha, 16, is committed to play at Vanderbilt in 2014. She was a member of last year's French-American Challenge Team, and this summer competed with Hios and Chen in the U.S. Girls Junior and also played in the U.S. Women's Public Links. Fleming was a semifinalist at this year's New Jersey Women's Amateur, and advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2012 U.S Women's Mid-Amateur. She successfully qualified for this year's Women's Mid-Am, which takes place in early October.

Playing for Connecticut is Met Area player Debbie Johnson of Stamford who will join Lisa Fern-Boros of Shelton and Jennifer Holland of Branford. Johnson is a past Stamford City Amateur champion who has played in two U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links and the 2010 U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur.
