Field Set for Senior Amateur, Super Senior Amateur Championships

CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. (May 16, 2018) – The Westchester Golf Association calendar of competitions began on Tuesday with qualifying at Hollow Brook Golf Club for the Senior Amateur and Super Senior Amateur Championships, but required an extra morning to conclude after play’s suspension due to weather.

Once final, 15 competitors punched their tickets to the Senior Amateur and 7 players earned their way to the Super Senior Amateur, both of which take place June 5-7 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Conn. The defending champions, Jim Romaniello and Russ Sirico are both exempt into their respective brackets and receive the top seed.

Michael Greene of Sunningdale and Tom Yellin of Stanwich led the Senior qualifiers, both carding 1-over 72s. Yellin recorded a field-best five birdies, while Greene’s score was slightly more consistent with just three bogeys and a pair of birdies. Six competitors followed tying for third with 3-over 74s, while all players shooting 6-over 77 or better safely advanced to Brooklawn.

Wednesday morning’s play featured a playoff for the final spot in the field, with Mike Fitzpatrick of Sterling Farms securing the position with a par on the first playoff hole over Vincent Zicca of Griff Harris. Zicca earned the first alternate position as no additional competitors returned for the playoff, while George Riehm of Sprain Valley took the second alternate, decided by lot.

In the Super Senior division, Don Worthley of Shorehaven and Rick Lawrence of Ridgewood (Conn.) led qualifiers with 3-over 74s. Rick Blank of Metropolis grabbed the third seed with a 4-over 75. Wednesday morning, Scotty George of Westchester earned the final qualifying position with par on the second playoff hole, with Peter Friedes of Wykagyl taking the first alternate position. MGA eClub – Wch/Ct member Gary Cymrot was chosen by lot as the second alternate.

The Senior Division requires players to be between 55 and 64 years of age with a Handicap Index that does not exceed 12.0. Super Senior competitors are 65 or older and own a Handicap Index that does not exceed 15.

The Senior Amateur will feature two rounds of match play on June 5, with the semifinals and final taking place June 6 and 7. The Super Senior Amateur features one round of match play per day, June 5-7.
