Connollys Capture Father & Son Title

GREENWICH, Conn. (August 9, 2021) -- A closing birdie sealed the deal for Gerard and Philip Connolly of Cherry Valley Club, as the duo posted a 2-under 68 at Tamarack Country Club to win the 71st MGA Father & Son Championship by one shot over a trio of teams.

In the Pinehurst format, the Connollys strung together 10 consecutive pars to open their round after beginning on the 10th hole. Though they had a pair of bogeys on the way in, four birdies, including one on the closing ninth hole allowed them to place their name on the McBride Cup. Hitting off his father's drive, 14-year-old Philip knocked the approach on the par-4 ninth to just four feet. Gerard knocked in what turned out to be the winning putt, but with the pair playing in the morning, they had to watch the leaderboard all day.

Brian and Will Celiberti of Arcola turned in a 1-under 69 in the morning, while Michael and Mike McBride of Arcola and Niall and Conor Handley of Rock Spring both did so in the afternoon as they made their own bids to claim the coveted Father and Son title.

Jay Linn Card and Jay Card of Gardiner's Bay came away with the professional division title, also shooting 2-under 68.

The Long Island Father & Son and Westchester Father & Son titles were also decided as flights within the MGA Father & Son Championship. The Connollys captured the Long Island title as well, while Michael and Robert Savitt of Century took the Westchester win, shooting even-par 70.

Competitors enjoyed outstanding conditions at Tamarack Country Club, where the large putting greens tested the players' strokes from start to finish.
