Lambrou Leads Final Public Links Qualifiers from Bethpage

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (May 31, 2018) – The MGA on Thursday conducted its fifth and final qualifier for the 71st MGA Public Links Championship. Christopher Lambrou of Salisbury shot 4-under-par 68 at Bethpage State Park’s Blue Course, leading 26 competitors who fired 76 or better to advance to Griffith E. Harris Golf Course in Greenwich, Conn., and the June 13 championship.

Lambrou made the turn in even-par 36, tallying a birdie and a bogey on his first nine. Lambrou then carded five birdies—including four of his final six holes—on his inward nine to grab medalist honors.

Gray Barnes of Centennial finished two shots back after a pair of contrasting nines. Barnes, who recently qualified for the MGA’s Ike Championship as well, opened with a 4-over 40, but carded a trio of consecutive birdies to begin his inward nine. Barnes continued to roll, adding birdies on Nos. 15-17 en route to his 2-under 70. Meanwhile, Dave Segot of Nassau Players rounded out those posting red numbers, carding birdies on Nos. 4 and 10 to just one bogey on the day for a 1-under 71.

Mike Sporton of Bethpage, Matt Corrigan of Nassau Players, Jason Zaretsky of Douglaston and MGA eClub – NYC member Matthew Rendell registered rounds of even-par 72 to easily advance to Griff Harris.

Dalyan Cemaletin of Glen Cove and Joe Giattino of Timber Point tallied 1-over 73s to tie eighth, while Donald Cervantes of Bethpage, Michael Auerbach of Nassau Players, Met PGA Junior member Kevin McGloin and MGA eClub – Wch/Ct member Ryan Garrity rounded out the top 10 qualifiers with 2-over 74s.

Seven competitors moved on in the nation’s oldest public links championship behind scores of 3-over 75 and the final six qualifiers earned their way by shooting 4-over 76.

Bethpage Blue played as a par 72 from 6,515 yards for a field of 104 competitors.
