Qualifying: 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (June 29, 2023) - The MGA is set to host four qualifiers for the 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship between June 29 and July 11, allowing players the chance to advance to Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., August 14-20.

An event which began in 1895, the U.S. Amateur Championship is the oldest USGA championship. Qualifying rounds consist of 36 holes of play. After the morning 18 holes, a cut will be made the the low 40% of players who teed off. Those who advance will compete over 36 holes of stroke play on the first two days, with sixty-four players advancing to match play for the remainder of the championship. A 36-hole final determines the champion. 

June 29 - Garden City Country Club, Garden City, N.Y.
Jack Chung of Greenwich, Conn., and Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., earned their tickets to the U.S. Amateur Championship from Garden City after both logging 2-under-par 138 totals. Lowe started the day with a 68 in round one and followed that with an even-par 70. Chung who carded an even-par 70 for the first round recorded a 2-under 68 in the second round to match Lowe and earn the second qualifying spot. Chung had an up and down second round which included bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2. He climbed back, recording seven birdies for the round. Lowe had a similar stretch in the second round of the day shooting 3-over on the front nine. But, he went on to birdie four holes on the back to finish even par. Ben Mangum of Brooklyn, N.Y., earned the first alternate position with a opening round 67 followed by a 72 to finish 1-under for the day. The second alternate spot was won in a playoff by Liam Pasternak of Morristown, N.J.

July 6 - Forsgate Country Club - Banks Course, Monroe Township, N.J.
Jeffrey Guan of Sydney, Australia tops the leaderboard and punches a ticket to the U.S. Amateur Championship after finishing 9-under par in the qualifer. Guan had the lead going into round 2 after carding a 65 in the first round. This round was highlighted by a bogey free 3-under on the front followed by 4-under on the back 9. He followed that with a 68 to finish 2 shots clear of Garrett Engle of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Engle took home the 2nd qualifying spot finishing 7 under for the day. His first round of 68 was followed by a 67 in the afternoon. Chase Nevins of Great Falls, Virginia and Drew Mulcahy of Gladstone New Jersey are the alternates. Chase Nevins came out on top of a 3-man playoff for the 1st alternate spot followed by Mulcahy.

July 10 - Haworth Country Club, Haworth, N.J.
Nathan Han of Somers N.Y. dominasted the field at Haworth Country Club, shooting 12-under on the day and finishing 5 shots clear of the nearest competitor to cruise to a U.S. Amateur spot. While Han fired an opening round 67 to put himself into contention, it was 9 birdies in the second round on his way to a 65 that cemented himself on the top of the leaderboard. Jack Woods of Danbury, Connecticut claimed the second qualifying spot after posting a 68 and 69 to finish 7-under for the day. This was one shot clear from Melan Dhaubhadel of Monroe, Louisiana and Peicheng Chen of Manorville, New York who both finished at 6-under. Chen earned the first alternate spot winning a one hole playoff. ​

July 11 - Bonnie Briar Country Club, Larchmont, N.Y.
Luke Colton of Frisco, Texas lead the field with a 4-under 138 to earn medalist honors at Bonnie Briar Country Club. Colton shot a 73 in the morning round to make the cut. He made the move up the leaderboard in the afternoon and finished with the best round of the day, a 65, for a 138 total. Shane Bacon of Westport, Conn., also punched his ticket to Cherry Hills shooting 2-under on the day. Bacon stayed consistent over the two rounds shooting a pair of 70s. The first alternate position went to Arthur Ouimet of Manchester, Conn., who finished 1-under par. Matthew Ferrari of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., earned the 2nd alternate position finishing at even-par on the day.
