Schedule Spotlight: USGA Qualifying

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (February 21, 2024) – Some of the most exciting days of the year come when players achieve the dream of advancing to a USGA national championship. This year will have no shortage of those days on the schedule, with the MGA conducting 19 qualifiers for USGA championships.

The first of the year also allows the MGA to be part of a special first for the USGA, with the Adaptive Open Championship moving to a qualifying model for its third playing. The MGA is one of six Allied Golf Associations (AGAs) that will conduct a qualifier for the championship, doing so on April 24 at Haworth Country Club in Haworth, N.J. Applications to enter the U.S. Adaptive Open are now open and close on April 10 at 5 p.m., with the championship this year taking place at Sand Creek Station in Newton, Kansas, July 8-10.

A series of five local qualifying rounds for the 124th U.S. Open Championship follow between April 29 and May 13, with Cold Spring Country Club (Apr. 29), Whippoorwill Club (May 2), Fairmount Country Club (May 6), Crestmont Country Club (May 9), and Country Club of Darien (May 13), all serving as first stops on the road to Pinehurst. The MGA’s final qualifying will once again be conducted at Canoe Brook Country Club, utilizing both the North and South Courses of the Summit, N.J., club on June 3. Applications for entry into the U.S. Open opened February 21 and remain open until 5 p.m., on April 10.

Qualifying rounds for the 75th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship and 76th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship will take place on May 20 at Southampton Golf Club, with players aiming to advance to El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., and Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., respectively.

Players aged 50 and older aim to advance to the 44th U.S. Senior Open Championship at Newport Country Club at the end of June, with the MGA-conducted qualifier taking place at Metropolis Country Club on May 21.

This year also marks the new two-stage qualifying structure for the U.S. Amateur Championship. Both local and final qualifying will be conducted over 18 holes. The MGA will conduct local qualifying on June 17 at Osiris Country Club in Walden, N.Y., while final qualifying will take place on July 22 at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle, N.Y., which has hosted 12 MGA majors during its history. The 124th U.S. Amateur Championship takes place at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.

Qualifying for a pair of senior USGA events takes place in New Jersey on back-to-back days in early July, with players aiming to punch tickets to the 69th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship (The Honors Course) from North Jersey Country Club on July 8 and the 6th U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship (Fox Chapel) from Green Brook Country Club on July 9.

The MGA will conduct a pair of qualifiers for the 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship (Kinloch), July 24 at Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell, N.J., and August 13 at Old Westbury Golf & Country Club in Old Westbury, N.Y.

The final three USGA qualifiers of the year are for 2025, with players aiming to advance to the 10th U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship from Greenwich Country Club on October 1 and to the 10th U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship from Pelham Country Club and Huntington Crescent Club on October 8 and 12, respectively.
