Kim Outlasts Pawul, Captures MGA/MetLife Boys Championship

Bedford, NY-Sun Ho Kim of Flushing, NY, avenged his runner-up finish in last month’s MGA Junior by winning the 36th annual MGA/MetLife Boys Championship at Bedford Golf and Tennis Club in Bedford, NY. Kim defeated Tim Pawul of East Setauket, NY, 2 up after beating Stephen Suarez of Springfield, NJ 4 & 3 in the morning. It is an accomplishment that satisfies the confident 15-year-old.

“I really wanted to win the Junior and the Boys so I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t win the Junior, but this feels really good,” he said.

The win adds to Kim’s already impressive season, having qualified for last week’s U.S. Junior Amateur at The Olympic Club as well as the impressive showing at the aforementioned MGA Junior. In addition, he also finished tied for third in the New York City Amateur at La Tourette GC in Staten Island in May.

Kim had a commanding 3-up lead with three holes to play, but Pawul, who has a semifinal and finals appearance in this event over the past two years, refused to go away. He won the next two holes, with a gift from Kim, who missed a 10-inch putt on the 16th hole that would have closed the match out, to get back to one-down heading into the 18th hole. However, Kim’s drive landed pin high on the green leading to a closing two-putt birdie.

Pawul defeated 14-year-old Morgan Hoffmann of Wyckoff, NJ, 2 & 1 in a close morning semifinal match to earn his chance at the title.

MetLife sponsored today’s Boys Championship for the 20th consecutive year.
