Loop, Wilson Headline Carter Cup Field at Baltusrol

Pairings and Starting Times

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 30, 2009) — An exceptional field is set to compete in the seventh annual Carter Cup at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey on Wednesday, August 5. The 36-hole event, the MGA’s junior stroke play championship, draws the top junior players in the Met Area and is contested over Baltusrol’s Upper and Lower courses, both former U.S. Open venues. In its short history, the Carter Cup has established itself as one of the premier junior championships in the country.

The 2009 Carter Cup will feature a field of 46 talented and determined young players, headlined by 16-year-old Cameron Wilson of Norwalk, Conn. Wilson, a former MGA/MetLife Boys champion and quarterfinalist at the 2009 U.S. Junior, also played on the 2009 Carey Cup team in Ireland and was low amateur at the 2009 Met Open. For the past two years, he has placed second in the Carter Cup, losing last year in a sudden-death playoff to Curtis Loopof New Canaan, Conn.

Loop will defend his championship this year against another strong field of prominent juniors vying for their shot at the Carter Cup title. These players include David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., who won the Met Junior in 2006 and again in 2009 at Engineers; 2008 MGA/MetLife Boys champion Peter Kimof Metuchen, N.J.; 2009 Met Junior finalist Pierce Dever of Avalon, N.J.; Ryan McCormick of Middletown, N.J., who qualified for this year’s U.S. Junior Amateur; Michael Miller of Brewster, N.Y., a former WGA Boys and Junior champion and also a qualifier for the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur; andBrody Nieporte of Bayville, N.Y., who placed third at the 2009 MGA/MetLife Public Links Championship.

Also in the field will be 13-year-old Matthew Lowe of Farmingdale, N.Y., who attempted to qualify for this year’s U.S. Open. Anthony Alex of Wayne, N.J., the 2008 New Jersey State Boys champion, and 2008 Met Junior finalist Dillon Corbo of Montville, N.J., are looking for their first MGA titles.

The Carter Cup is an invitational event open to juniors who have not reached 19 years of age. It is named in honor of the late Michael P. Carter, an accomplished junior player and standout member of the Delbarton School golf team in Morristown, N.J., who died in a car accident in 2002. Carter was a junior club champion at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot Golf Clubs, and was a promising player on the golf team at Penn State University. The event is a collaborative effort between Baltusrol Golf Club and the MGA. Michael’s father, who passed away in 2005, was a former club president of Baltusrol and was vice president of the MGA.

Playing 36 holes on two championship golf courses in the heat of summer is a test of mental and physical endurance. Each and every year, the young players in the Carter Cup field show a poise and maturity beyond their years in negotiating the difficult Upper and Lower Courses at Baltusrol in very challenging conditions. Their enthusiasm and support for this event is inspiring, and is a lasting tribute to the memory of Michael Carter.

The Metropolitan Golf Association thanks Baltusrol Golf Club for once again hosting this prestigious event. Further, we also wish to recognize the Carter family for their continued support, which has helped to make the Carter Cup one of the most coveted titles in the Met Area.

Live scoring for both rounds of The Carter Cup will be available on www.mgagolf.org. For more information please contact Bob Nielsen (bnielsen@mgagolf.org) or Lou Cutolo (lcutolo@mgagolf.org) at the MGA at 914-347-4653.
