Wilson, Pastore Advance to Round of 16 at Met Junior

Day One Results

ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 15, 2009) - As the first two rounds came to a close today at the 92nd Met Junior Championship sponsored by MetLife at Engineers Country Club in Roslyn Harbor, N.Y., many of the favorites coming into the championship had advanced to the round of 16. Notable among them was 2006 MGA/MetLife Boys champion, and 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier,Cameron Wilson of Norwalk, Conn., who defeated Ethan Wall of Brielle, N.J., in the first round and Andrew DeForestof Cottekill, N.Y., in the second round.

Wilson, who won the AJGA Nationwide Insurance Junior on July 9, will be joined in the round of 16 by a group of very accomplished junior players. One of the 16 is the 2006 Met Junior champion David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., who defeated John Ezekowitz of Princeton, N.J., in the first round and Doug Walters of Blairstown, N.J., in the second.

 

 

Last year’s runner-up, Dillon Corbo of Montville, N.J., also advanced to the round of 16 by beating Rich Bohny of Holmdel, N.J., 5 and 4, in the first round and Nick DePalma of Wallkill, N.Y., 3 and 2, in the second round. Anthony Alex of Wayne, N.J., who qualified for the 2009 U.S. Junior Amateur, notched two impressive wins today. He defeated Conor McGovern of Darien, Conn., 5 and 3, in the first round and continued his strong play with a 6 and 4 victory over Ray Schuttenberg of Elmsford, N.Y. Players who advanced to the round of 16 receive an invitation to the 2009 Carter Cup-MGA Junior Stroke Play Championship.

There were a few upsets during the first day of play, including 2008 MGA/MetLife Boys championPeter Kim of Metuchen, N.J., who lost in the first round to William Breed of Greenwich, Conn. Another notable upset was Brody Nieporte of Bayville, N.Y., who lost his first round match to Pat Wilson of Andover, N.J. Nieporte finished third at the MGA/MetLife Public Links Championship on July 7. Also among the upsets was 2007 MGA/MetLife Boys champion Jonathan Renza, who lost in the second round to Peter Ballo of Stamford, Conn.

The round of 16 is scheduled to begin at 7:15 a.m., with the quarterfinals to begin immediately following the completion of that round.
