11 Players Qualify at Aspetuck Valley for 111th Met Amateur Championship

Weston, Conn. (July 9, 2013) – 157 players competed Monday at Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston, Conn. for a trip to the MGA’s second major championship of the season, the Met Amateur Championship held on August 1-4 at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn. Seven spots (plus ties) were up for grabs and at the end of the day 11 players shot rounds of 3-over 74 to qualify.

Jon Groveman of The Connecticut Golf Club won medalist honors by carding a 2-under 69, the only player in the field to post his score lower than par. Chris Connolly of Scarsdale shot even par and took the second qualifying position.

Three players tied for third, including Paul Giavonnetti of Westchester, Peter Ballo of Woodway, and John Jackopsic of MGA eClub – West/Fairfield. All three players shot one-over rounds of 72 to earn their trip to Stanwich. Stu Kauffman of Westchester qualified alone in sixth place carding a two-over 73.

Five players sneaked into the Met Amateur final field with three-over rounds of 74. Ethan DeForest of Rondout, Max Adler of Sterling Farms, Ray Floyd Jr. of Innis Arden, Cyrus Whiteney III of Hackensack, and John Crowley of Round Hill will all be at the beautiful Stanwich Club when the Met Amateur Championship begins August 1.

The Met Amateur is open to all amateurs who belong to a Met Area club and have a Handicap Index not exceeding 5.0, and is the MGA’s oldest championship.
