Pastore, Renza and Henny among locals in U.S. APL Field

ELMSFORD, N.Y. - This year will be the final playing of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and the field features some local Met Area players and ones that could certainly contend for the trophy. The last edition of the event will be played at Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas on July 14-19.

Leading the way for the locals is the red hot David Pastore of Greenwich, Conn., who is coming off his 4th MGA victory after winning the Ike at Montclair Golf Club. He also won the WGA Open on July 8,  Pastore medaled at his U.S. APL Sectional Qualifying Round at the Bethpage Blue Course, shooting rounds of 66 and 69 for a 9-under total. The University of Virginia graduate is playing some of the best golf of his career and hopes to bring that kind of game to Kansas and bring home a USGA trophy.

2013 MGA Public Links Champion Jacob Henny of Norwalk, Conn., will also make his way to Sand Creek Station for the championship. Henny qualified in his home state of Connecticut. Westchester Amateur champion and recent Rutgers graduate Johnathan Renza of Cortlandt Manor, N.Y. will join Pastore in Kansas. Renza was the only qualifier from Hudson Hills and despite an opening round 80, he fired a 71 on his second 18 which would be good enough to get him into the APL field. Another Scarlet Knight and former teammate of Renza's is Jacob Stockl of Clark, N.J., who shot a 3-under total at Neshanic Valley to get him into the field.

Also in the field will be three other New York natives that qualified with Pastore at Bethpage Blue. St. John's Golf team member Dylan Crowley of Glen Cove, N.Y. finished four strokes behind Pastore at the Sectional Qualifier with rounds of 68 and 71 for a 5-under total. Crowley also just qualified for the U.S. Amateur. Michael Miranda of Farmingville, N.Y. went 71-67 for a 6-under total at Bethpage to qualify. Also at that same site was Kurt Brey of Farmingdale, N.Y., who qualified with rounds of 68 and 72 for a 4-under total.
