8 Advance to U.S. Open SQR from Cherry Valley

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (May 16, 2018) – James Hazen of Coram, N.Y., shot a round of 4-under 68 at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y. to lead 8 qualifiers at 71 or better in the fifth and final MGA-conducted U.S. Open local qualifying round.

Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, Conn. was close behind with a round of 2-under 70. Six players tied at 1-under 71 to qualify on the number (Corey Birch of Ridgefield, Conn., Mark Brown of Oyster Bay, N.Y., Thomas Curtis of Orlando, FL., Scott Ford of Manhasset, N.Y., Brian Hughes of Raleigh, N.C., and Arthur Zelmati of Brooklyn, N.Y.).

A playoff was needed in order to determine the alternate positons with Jim Farrell of East Norwich, N.Y., earning the first alternate positon while Dylan Newman of New Rochelle, N.Y., grabbed the second alternate position.

The Cherry Valley Club was set up as a par 72 at 6,739 yards. Rain began before the first competitors had finished their rounds, and the entire second wave played in it.

As the final step on the road to Shinnecock Hills for the 118th U.S. Open Championship, the MGA will conduct one of 10 sectional qualifying rounds throughout the United States on Monday, June 4 at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J.
