ELMSFORD, N.Y. (July 30, 2019) – The Met Area's top junior players return to historic Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., on Wednesday, July 31 for the 17th Carter Cup–the official MGA Junior Stroke Play Championship. After competing at Winged Foot Golf Club last year due to Baltusrol's hosting of the U.S. Junior Amateur, players will compete upon Baltusrol's famed Upper and Lower Courses to determine a champion in the event.

The Carter Cup was first played in 2003 and is named in honor of Michael P. Carter, an accomplished junior player at Baltusrol and standout member of the golf team at New Jersey’s Delbarton School who died in a car accident in 2002. Carter had won the junior club championships at both Baltusrol and Winged Foot, and at the time of his death played for Penn State.

Even with its brief history, the Carter Cup has produced an incredible list of champions, including PGA TOUR player Morgan Hoffmann (2005), now professionals Max Buckley (2007), Cameron Wilson (2009), and David Pastore (2010), and recent Wake Forest graduate and 2019 U.S. Open competitor Cameron Young (2011). This year’s field is once again filled with the area’s best up-and-coming talents.

One Last Shot
Recent U.S. Junior Amateur competitors Nathan Han of Somers, N.Y., and Jack Wall of Brielle, N.J., are both aiming to close out their Carter Cup career with a victory after putting together stellar records in the event. This is Han's sixth time and Wall's fifth time competing in the championship, with both owning top-10 finishes each of the last three years. They both finished tied for third last year in the weather-shortened (27-holes) event.

Last Time at Baltusrol
After last year's playing at Winged Foot, the event returns to Baltusrol and its traditional home. Three players in this year's field finished in the top-10 when the Carter Cup last took place at Baltusrol in 2017: Han, Wall and Jackson Fretty of Cos Cob, Conn.

From Winged Foot to Baltusrol
Players recording top-10 finishes last year at Winged Foot and looking to log high finishes once again include last year's runner-up Sean Vowells of Chatham, N.J., Han and Wall, Edmond Broderick of Bayonne, N.J., Charlie Berridge of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Nolan Forsman of Larchmont, N.Y.

Carter Cup Debut
Luke Sample of New York City will aim to keep his strong summer rolling at Baltusrol. The 16-year-old is making his first appearance in the event and is amidst an impressive stretch, having finished as runner-up in the Met Junior, won the New York State Boys' Junior and qualified for the 104th Met Open Championship on Monday at Haworth.

Carter Cup to Met Amateur
Nine players are looking to build momentum from Wednesday to carry into the 117th Met Amateur Championship at Hudson National, which takes place Thursday through Sunday. Those include the previously mentioned Han, Fretty, Wall, and Sample, as well as Ben Carpenter of Darien, Conn., Dean Greyserman of Short Hills, N.J., Jimin Jung of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y., Randall Lazzaro of Colts Neck, N.J., and Matt Minerva, Jr. of Elmsford, N.Y.

The Race is On
The Carter Cup is another marquee event in the season-long race for the MGA Junior Player of the Year Award, Presented by Callaway, which is now in its third year. Nine of the current top-10 competitors in the race are in the field for the Carter Cup. The winner will receive 225 points.
