Connecticut Men's and New York Women's Teams Finish Strong in the 5th USGA State Team Championship

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Jerry Courville Jr. of Milford, CT fired a three round total of one-under par 209 (70 – 71 – 68), to finish t-4th and lead his Connecticut team to a 6th place finish in the 5th USGA Men’s State Team Championship at Charles River Country Club in Newton Centre, Mass.  Courville was joined by teammates Jeff Hedden of Quaker Hill and Justin Goodhue of Glastonbury.  The best two rounds out of the three were counted for each of the three days giving the Connecticut team a total of four-over par 424 (136 – 141 – 144).

George Zahringer Named to Walker Cup Team

Far Hills, N.J. – George Zahringer, 50, of New York, N.Y., earned one of the final two spots on the 10-man United States of America team for the Walker Cup Match that was played at Ganton Golf Club in North Yorkshire, England, Sept. 6-7, against a team representing Great Britain and Ireland.

WAYNE, N.J.-On a windy day in Wayne, New Jersey, fifty year old Darrell Kestner of Deepdale fired a final round even par 71 for a 36-hole total of four-under par 138 (67-71) to capture the 7th MGA/Canon Senior Open Championship at Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, NJ by an impressive four strokes over Bobby Heins of Old Oaks CC, in Purchase, NY.

WAYNE, N.J.-Fifty-two year old Bobby Heins of Old Oaks fired an opening round five-under par 66 (34-32) to take a one-shot lead into tomorrow's final round of the 7th MGA/Canon Senior Open Championship at Preakness Hills Country Club in Wayne, NJ. Heins, the 2001 and 2002 Met PGA Senior Player of the Year, began his round on Preakness Hills’ converted par-four 1st with his only bogey for the day.  The two-time Met Open champion came back with six birdies on the round.

BRISTOL, VA.-Dr. Robert McIntyre of Westfield, NJ playing out of Plainfield advanced to the third round of Match Play at the 149th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at The Virginian Golf Club, in Bristol, VA.

 

McIntyre fired rounds of 72 and 78 for a two-round total of 150 to earn the 58th qualifying spot, and then went on to beat 7th seed Spencer Sappington of Alpharetta, GA, 2 & 1.  In the second round McIntyre defeated Russ Berkoben of Perrysburg, OH, 1 up.  In this afternoon’s round of 32 McIntyre faces Charles Roy Smethurst from England.

Ganton, North Yorkshire, England-Reigning Welsh Amateur champion Stuart Manley won his singles match and fellow countryman Nigel Edwards halved the last match Sunday, giving Great Britain and Ireland a record third consecutive victory over the USA in the Walker Cup Match at Ganton Golf Club, 12½ to 11½.

Amateur Svoboda Wins By Five at the 88th MGA/MetLife Open Championship

Jackson, NJ…. Amateur Andrew Svoboda of Winged Foot shot a final round four-under-par 68 for a three round total of 209 to capture the 88th MGA/MetLife Open Championship by five shots today at Metedeconk National Golf Club.  This is the second time in three years that an amateur has captured the title, as Johnson Wagner won in 2001, but returned as a professional to successfully defend in 2002.

ARDSLEY-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In what turned out to be a battle of the number one & two seeds, and also close friends, Martin Catalioto, of Ramsey, N.J., capped off an exceptional week by defeating Jack Skirkanich, of Rumson, N.J., 3 & 1 to capture his second MGA/MetLife Junior Championship at Ardsley CC in Ardsley-on-Hudson, N.Y. The event was again sponsored by MetLife.
