Nantz, Barrow Help Celebrate Grand Opening of the First Tee of Metropolitan New York

Bronx, NY - CBS Sports Commentator Jim Nantz and The First Tee Executive Director Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., today joined New York City officials for

the grand opening of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York at Mosholu Golf Course.

 

The project is a joint initiative of The First Tee, the City of New York/Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan PGA Section and the

Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation.

Washington, N.J.-Eight Met Area golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2003 U.S. Open during local qualifying held Tuesday, May 13th at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, NJ.

 

Leading the way was Andy Brock of Metuchen, who posted a round of 68 (36 – 32) to lead the field of 147 amateurs and professionals on a cloudy day in western New Jersey. Brock was one shot better than David Laudien of Howell Park, who shot a 69 (34 – 35).

PURCHASE, N.Y.-Fredrik Jacobson of Kungsbacka GC in Sweden finished with an impressive 3 under par 138, to claim medallist honors at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Round held on Tuesday, June 3 at Old Oaks CC and Century CC, both in Purchase, NY.  Jacobson led a field of 72 golfers vying for four spots in the U.S. Open Championship at Olympia Fields’ North Course in Olympia Fields, Ill on June 12-15.

Sean Leonard, of GC of South Jersey, led a group of nine qualifiers today at the Hudson Valley sectional qualifying round at Orange County Golf Club, in Middletown, NY, who qualified for the MGA’s 48th “Ike” Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Leonard shot an even par 72 (36-36) to earn a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.

Alan Specht of Wheatley Hills and Scott Osler of North Fork led a group of 16 qualifiers today at the Eastern Long Island Sectional Qualifier at Southampton Golf Course, in Southampton, NY, who qualified for the MGA’s 48th “Ike” Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Specht and Osler both shot a 1-under par 69 to share medallist honors and earn a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.

Ron Vannelli led a group of 14 qualifiers today at Metuchen Golf and Country Club, in Edison, NJ, who qualified for the MGA’s 48th “Ike” Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Vannelli carded a 5-under-par 67 (33-34) to earn medallist honors and a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.

 

The top 13 finishers (+ties) from a field of 141 golfers qualified for the tournament, which will be held June 30th – July 1st at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, NY. Today’s qualifier was the third of five to be held in the Met Area.

PURCHASE, N.Y.-With the Buick Classic moved to mid-June, the field for the 2003 U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying will have a distinct local flavor this year.  Seventy-two players, including many of the Met Area’s most accomplished professional and amateur competitors, will compete Tuesday, June 2nd at both Century and Old Oaks Country Clubs in Purchase, NY for one of four spots in the final field of the USGA’s premier event.  The 2003 U.S. Open is scheduled for June 12-15 at the North Course at Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

East Norwalk, CT.-Andrew Friedwald of Old Oaks Country Club led a group of 24 qualifiers today at Shorehaven Golf Club, in East Norwalk, CT, which qualified for the MGA’s 48th Ike Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Friedwald carded an even par 71 (35-36) to earn medallist honors and a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.

COLONIA, N.J.-Louis Carducci, of Shoreview GC, fired a net two-under-par 70 to edge out three competitors by one shot to win the 2003 MGA Senior & Pre-Senior (Net) Tournament at Colonia Country Club in Colonia, NJ.  Ken Eichele, of Nassau Players, carded nines of 36 – 38 = 74 to capture the low gross honors.
