ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Ten Met Area golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2003 U.S. Open during local qualifying held Monday, May 12th at Knollwood Country Club in Elmsford, NY.

Rose Captures MGA Senior Amateur Title

PARAMUS, N.J.-Stephen Rose of Fresh Meadow CC fought off Mother Nature, and a highly competitive field, to capture the 76th MGA Senior Amateur Championship title at Arcola CC in Paramus, NJ.  Rose posted rounds of 72-76, to finish three stokes in front of Robert Currey and Bob Howe, both of Winged Foot.

Sag Harbor, N.Y.-Six Met Area golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2003 U.S. Open during local qualifying held Wednesday, May 7th at Noyac Golf Club in Sag Harbor, NY. Four players shot a two-under par 70 to lead the field of 87.   They are Mark Brown of Tam O’Shanter, Darrell Kestner from Deepdale, Raymond Floyd, Jr., an amateur, also from Deepdale, and John Guyton from Wheatley Hills.

PARAMUS, N.J.-Twenty-five golfers advanced Monday and will compete in Tuesday’s final round of the 76th MGA Senior Amateur Championship at Arcola Country Club in Paramus, NJ.  Powers McLean of Jumping Brook GC, and Stephen Rose of Fresh Meadow CC, led a strong field of golfers after each fired an opening round even-par 72. They lead Jeff Johns of Hackensack CC, Bob Howe of Winged Foot CC, and Shawn McLoughlin of Ridgewood (CT) by two strokes heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Greenville, SC.-Former Met Area standout, and current PGA rookie Johnson Wagner shot 2-under over the first 29 holes at the Nationwide Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am at The Cliffs in Greenville, SC. The second round was cut short due to inclement weather, Wagner is currently on pace to make the cut which is projected to be –2.

MGA Concludes 2003 Caddie Academy Season

Elmsford, N.Y.- The Metropolitan Golf Association held its annual number of Caddie Academies at a number of Met Area golf clubs. More than 700 new caddies were trained by the experienced staff if the MGA.

 

Seminars were held in New Jersey at Hackensack CC in Oradell, Raritan Valley CC in Bridgewater and at Rock Spring CC in West Orange.

 

In Long Island, seminars were held at Nassau CC in Glen Cove and at Hempstead CC in Hempstead.

Zahringer Misses Cut but Still Makes History at Masters

AUGUSTA, Ga.- Nine-time MGA Player of the Year George Zahringer III fell short in his quest to make the cut at the 2003 Masters at Augusta National. The 49-year old Zahringer still made Masters history by becoming the oldest rookie to qualify for the Tournament.

 

Zahringer earned his invitation to Augusta by virtue of his win at The 2002 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at his home course, The Stanwich Club, in Greenwich, CT last year.

AUGUSTA, Ga.-George Zahringer III walked up to the first tee at Augusta National determined to live out a lifelong dream of playing at The Masters. At a rain-soaked Augusta National, where the field played 36 holes on Friday for the first time in 64 years, Zahringer struggled and posted a 10-over-par 82 over his first 18. He hopes to rebound in the afternoon.

ELMSFORD, N.Y.-Nine time MGA Player of the Year, George Zahringer III is set to compete in the 2003 Masters at Augusta National starting on Thursday, April 10th.  Zahringer is one of only four amateurs invited to compete this year and earned the coveted spot by virtue of his historic win at the U.S. Mid Amateur Championship at the Stanwich Club in 2002.  The victory came after an all- Met -Area final in which George defeated ’95 champion Jerry Courville Jr. of Shorehaven GC, to become, at age 49, the oldest U.S.
