Marquee Field Set for 48th Ike

No fewer than three U.S. Mid Amateur champions top the list of contenders who will begin their quest for the 2003 Ike Championship title on Monday, July 30th at the demanding Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, NY.  A field of 101 players, pared from an entry of 691, will compete over two days, 54 holes, stroke play to take home team and individual titles in the MGA’s prestigious Stroke Play Championship. This year, Canon USA takes over the sponsorship of The Ike, the beginning of what is hoped to be a long and successful relationship.

White Plains, N.Y.- Amateur James Graham of Winged Foot Country Club, shot a 2 under par 69 at Elmwood Country Club in White Plains, NY, to lead a group of three golfers who advanced to the 24th U.S. Senior Open, scheduled for June 26th – 29th, 2003, at The Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Joining him are Louis Carbonetti and six-time NJSGA Amateur Champion, 64-year old Robert Housen of Manasquan River CC, who both carded one-under 70’s to gain their spots in the championship.

Bronx, NY - CBS Sports Commentator Jim Nantz and The First Tee Executive Director Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., today joined New York City officials for

the grand opening of The First Tee of Metropolitan New York at Mosholu Golf Course.

 

The project is a joint initiative of The First Tee, the City of New York/Parks and Recreation, the Metropolitan PGA Section and the

Metropolitan Golf Association Foundation.

Eight Golfers Advance at U.S. Open Qualifying

Washington, N.J.-Eight Met Area golfers advanced to the sectional qualifying stage for the 2003 U.S. Open during local qualifying held Tuesday, May 13th at Hawk Pointe Golf Club in Washington, NJ.

 

Leading the way was Andy Brock of Metuchen, who posted a round of 68 (36 – 32) to lead the field of 147 amateurs and professionals on a cloudy day in western New Jersey. Brock was one shot better than David Laudien of Howell Park, who shot a 69 (34 – 35).

PURCHASE, N.Y.-Fredrik Jacobson of Kungsbacka GC in Sweden finished with an impressive 3 under par 138, to claim medallist honors at the U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying Round held on Tuesday, June 3 at Old Oaks CC and Century CC, both in Purchase, NY.  Jacobson led a field of 72 golfers vying for four spots in the U.S. Open Championship at Olympia Fields’ North Course in Olympia Fields, Ill on June 12-15.

Sean Leonard, of GC of South Jersey, led a group of nine qualifiers today at the Hudson Valley sectional qualifying round at Orange County Golf Club, in Middletown, NY, who qualified for the MGA’s 48th “Ike” Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Leonard shot an even par 72 (36-36) to earn a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.

Alan Specht of Wheatley Hills and Scott Osler of North Fork led a group of 16 qualifiers today at the Eastern Long Island Sectional Qualifier at Southampton Golf Course, in Southampton, NY, who qualified for the MGA’s 48th “Ike” Stroke Play Championship presented by Canon USA.  Specht and Osler both shot a 1-under par 69 to share medallist honors and earn a spot in the field of the MGA’s first major of the year.
